6th Plate Tintype of a Infantry Union Soldier with His Musket, Bowie & Sword
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original 6th plate Tintype image of a Civil War Union soldier. These tintype images were produced on a thin piece of tin. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. This image is very clear with a few bends and the slight losses on the right hand side. The sharp looking Yankee soldier holds his musket in front of him. He is carrying the famous US model 1816 .69 caliber musket. He wears the early pattern style shell coat with the tabs on the shoulders. He has the forage style military hat on his head. On the hat, he has the company letter "B" insignia. Around his waist, he has the US belt buckle visible. Neatly tucked behind the belt is the fighting knife. In his hand he proudly holds the sword up. The sword is the militia style that would have likely had a knight's head or eagle head pommel. It comes in a half of a leatherette case that is in fine shape. The image is in fine shape as you can see. This is a good looking Civil War infantryman with his musket, knife and sword!
