Here is a great display piece from the early 1800's. This is the dress style military hat that was worn by an American officer. It has the tall design with the two pointed corner edges which is why they are known as a "Bicorn" hat. This one has the bever felt body with some of the edge trim still hanging on after all of the years. On the front of the hat it has the very large cockade that is held in place with the red band with the golden trim in the center. The band is terminated with the bullion ornamentation. In the center of the hear of the cockade is has a smaller cockade that is made of black with the finely crafted stamped brass Union eagle. The eagle still retains a superb amount of the gold gilding. The eagle measures 1-3/4th inches across. When you turn the hat over, you see the original white lining and it has the "LONDON" production location. You also see the original leather sweat band remaining with some wear. The hat has the wear that you can see but still displays quite well as you can see. It isn't often that these survive and this one looks nice.
