Here is a very fine original Civil War era medical item. This is an original surgeon's folding tenaculum that measures 4-5/8ths inches in overall length with the blade itself making up 2 of those inches. This is the version that is known as a "tenaculum". A tenaculum is a surgical instrument, usually classified as a type of forceps. It consists of a slender sharp-pointed hook attached to a handle and is used mainly in surgery for seizing and holding parts, such as blood vessels. These folded up like a pocket knife so they could be more easily carried in a small space. They were quite popular with traveling physicians of the day. This is the multipiece construction used during the Civil War era they later realized that this multipiece construction would allow bacteria to grow more easily than the single piece construction used in later years. The handle is made of 2 nice piece of tortoiseshell that displays quite well. On the left-hand side of the blade itself you can see the stamped maker's marking of the New York firm of Hernstein. He was one of the premier surgical equipment makers of the Civil War era. This is a nice and still affordable piece of Civil War era medical history.
