CS Secretary George Trenholm Autograph on an 1868 Blockade Bond Document
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is an original document with an interesting history! This is a nice original $1000 bond issued on January 1,1868 by the John Fraser & Company; Fraser, Trenholm & Company and others. John Fraser & Company was the Confederacy's overseas banking company during the war. Fraser, Trenholm & Company operated blockade runners to get supplies to the Confederacy. Signed by former Confederate capitalists including Confederate Secretary of the Treasury George A. Trenholm (1807-1876). These papers were evidently an effort to repay some of the investors that tried to help the Confederate forces during the War. The document size is about 8-1/2 by 10-1/4th inches in size. The autograph of Trenholm is vividly clear and actually there are three, two on the front and one on the back. On the one side it also has the original tax stamp with the image of President George Washington. It is accompanied by a modern Xerox image of Secretary Trenholm. What a neat document!
