Here is an original US model 1816 military rifle. The lock plate has the crisp maker's Mark of the firm of Evans but if you notice, the diemaker misspelled the Evans name. According to Flayderman's guide, Evans only made about 5,000 of these flintlock muskets and manufactured them between 1825 and 1830. Below the Evans name it has the desirable stamp of "VALLEY FORGE". Behind the hammer it has the vividly clear 1826 production date stamped into the metal. The mechanics of the lock plate work on all positions. It would have originally been a flintlock when it left the factory but was converted to percussion later on. It was converted to percussion using the drum style conversion. Many of these .69 caliber conversions were used by soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. The barrel is full-length and at the breech of the barrel it has the remnants of the "US" stamp as well as the sunken "P" proof mark. It has the barrel production date of 1836 stamped into the barrel tang. The stock of the gun has a very attractive look with a dark patina all over. As you can see the Walnut wood has a very fine grain and a very pleasing well worn appearance. On the flat of the stock opposite the lock plate you can still see the traces of the original inspector cartouche. The stampings are for the gun was approved for military service by the US inspector. On the underside of the gun it has both of the original sling swivels intact and they both pivot. In the channel underneath the barrel it has the original full-length ramrod. The majority of these guns were converted to percussion later on but not this one. It is a beautiful original musket from the famous Valley Forge firm of W.L. Evans.
