This is a very nice original early U.S. military sword. It is the famous pattern made by the Nathan Starr Company of Middleton, Connecticut. This is the scarce contract model of 1812-1813. According to the books there were 10,000 of these pattern swords delivered. It has a full-length 33-3/4ths inch blade that has a nice gray tone. These swords are designed with the clip style blade point. At the base of the blade it has the excellent original markings. It has "US" stamp along with the inspector initials and the "N.STARR" mark. It also has the inspector initials "HPP" for Henry H. Perkin who was the inspector for the U.S. ordnance department. The iron guard is present and it still retains the "P" inspector initial on the bow of the guard. The handle is in very nice shape all over with a large amount of the original leather. These sword grips never had a wire wrapping but instead they have the grooves in the wood and leather to provide the grip. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard that is complete with rings as well as the throat and drag. This is a great complete example of a scarce sword from U.S. history.
