This
is an excellent original pack of paper and brass cartridges for the Civil War
Smith patent cavalry carbine. It is the original complete pack of 10 of the cartridges. The top of the pack has the original paper label that reads "10 POULTNEY'S PATENT METALLIC CARTRIDGES, Patented Dec. 15th 1863 12 Caps FOR Smith's Breech-Loading CARBINE". It then adds "No. 1 50-100 Caliber. Address POULTNEY & TRIMBLE, Baltimore, Md." This .50 caliber bullet was patented on
December 15th 1863. It has all 10 of the brass cartridges with the paper
wrapping. They are each in nice condition all the way around. This pattern is
illustrated on page 34 of the cartridge book. According to them there
were 30,062 Smith carbine purchased by the Government along with
13,861,500 of the cartridges. Not many of them survive and this is a complete pack with an excellent label intact.
