Here is a great looking large document with a beautiful autograph. This one page thick paper is partially printed with the blanks nicely filled in with ink. The overall size measures 24 inches by 19-inches in size. It is presented in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 2, 1885. This beautiful document is topped off with the vividly clear autograph of Union General Winfield Scott Hancock "Hancock the Superb". He signs this large certificate as Commander in Chief of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS), a brotherhood of former Union officers. The recipient named in the document, Lieutenant Colonel John Wesley Awl, is being elevated to "Companion of the First Class". Awl was commissioned into the Field and Staff of the 201st Pennsylvania Infantry on August 29, 1864. The MOLLUS certificate is attractively illustrated with an engraved vignette showing a Union soldier and sailor with flags. In addition to Hancock's signature by Hancock it is countersigned by John P. Nicholson, as recorder and chief. The piece is in very good condition with some uniform toning with some closed edge tears, some old tape repairs, and scattered soiling. The document is currently rolled so it will need to be flattened for framing.
