Red River Gunboats CDV Image from 1864 with USS Louisville, Neosha and Lexington
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great published image of three of the ships that made up the famous Brown Water Navy. This is an image of the USS Louisville, Neosha and Lexington on the Red River, just before the completion of Bailey's Dam. Things from the Red River area are tough to find. This exact image is illustrated on page 148 in the book by Gary D. Joiner entitled Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy. The ships are clear as a bell and is the only example of this image that we have encountered. The card has the deterioration on the edges. On the back of the card it has the McPherson & Oliver Photographer marking from New Orleans, Louisiana. A xerox copy of the page from the book will accompany the image.
