Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original gun worm for a Civil War era Model 1816 pattern .69 caliber musket or rifle. This is the classic style that would have been used with the large caliber bore military muskets. These were used for the cleaning out of the musket bore. They held a wad of tow (the fiber of flax, hemp or jute). This tow has then used for regular maintenance of bore cleaning. They could also be used for the extracting a bullet if there was a problem with firing or any other reason they needed to pull the bullet out. It is like the ones illustrated on page 102 of the gun tool book. This one is in excellent non-excavated condition.
