Siege Size Cannon Image from Fort Canby in Washington State
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very cool image from Washington state. This is a great image of three Civil War vintage siege style cannon. They are the large Rodman style cannon on their pivoting bases. You can also see a large stand of cannonballs. The card itself measures 8-1/4ths inches by 5-1/4ths inches in size. The back of the card has no maker marking. The base of the front of the image has the ink notation of "Cannon at Fort Canby". Fort Canby is located in Ilwaco, Washington. In 1862, during the American Civil War, a camp called Post at Cape Disappointment was established and fortifications existed here from that date to protect the northern approaches to the mouth of the Columbia River from possible attacks by Confederate raiders or foreign fleets. It was garrisoned by Company A, U.S. 9th Infantry Regiment and Company A, 8th Regiment California Volunteer Infantry in the District of Oregon. In 1863, its mate Fort Stevens was established on the south bank of the Columbia River. In 1864, the post was renamed Fort Cape Disappointment. What a great image!
