This is a very cool looking weapon! It is the desirable musket that is known to collectors as the "Brown Bess". This is one of the most famous styles of weapon ever produced. This is the 3rd model that would have been made around the time of the War of 1812. This one has an ancient attic black color all over. is a fine looking untouched piece from all angles. It has the desirable "TOWER" arsenal mark on the lockplate. When the gun left the factory, it would have been a flintlock and was converted to percussion later on. The action works crisply on all positions. The nipple has been gone for eons. The barrel of the musket is full-length at 39 inches in length and fires a smooth .75 caliber musket ball. At the breech of the barrel it has the English style proof marks still very clearly marked. The stock is attractive with a good look and rich grain and pleasing deep dark tone. On the back of the shoulder stock it has the "1800" marking stamped into the wood and partially in the brass side plate. This would be the 1800 date of production. All of the brass parts have a mellow golden tone. There were lots of brass parts on these guns including the buttplate, triggerguard, ramrod channel guides and nose cap. It has a modern made replacement ramrod in the channel underneath the barrel and it matches perfectly. It has one of the sling swivels still present. If you have wanted an attractive 3rd model Brown Bess flintlock, then this one is for you.
