Blade Etched Civil War Naval Officer's Sword of a Civil War Marine
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a classic original Civil War naval officer's sword. Officially known as the U.S. model 1852 naval officer's sword, this is the style that was worn by naval officers during the Civil War. The blade is full length at 29 inches and it still has a fine amount of the etching on each side with patriotic and other designs. The front side has the anchor with the shield towards the base. On down the blade, it has a panoply of arms with the "USN" letters. On the back of the blade, it has the banner with the "USN" lettering as well as the large anchor. On the back side of the blade it has the Union eagle perched on a cannon. What makes this one extra special is what it beautifully etched down towards the tip. It proudly reads "GEORGE FOX BRADLET 1864 - 1866". When I looked up the name, there was only one match. George Bradley mustered in as a substitute in the U.S. Marine Corps on October 1st 1864. It states that he died on May 1st 1867. It notes that on April 16th 1866, he was promoted to Corporal. He served onboard the USS St. Mary's and the USS Jamestown. The guard and pommel cap have always stood apart from the normal Civil War officer's sword. It has the bold "USN" in the basket of the guard and the quillion is made like a serpent's head. At the very top of the pommel cap it has the droop wing style naval eagle. If you notice that all of the brass parts have a beautiful golden patina. This one has the majority of the original sharkskin grip remaining as well as the double twist wire. It is missing the scabbard as is so often the case. This is an attractive looking original Civil War naval officer's sword with an etched blade that displays well and you know who owned it.
