QUICK CHANGE BLADE! Large Size Surgeon's Amputation Saw for a Leg or Arm
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very fine original Civil War era amputation saw. This is the large size that resembles a modern day hacksaw. It would have been used to remove arms and legs. These high quality instruments had interchangeable blade to make them last longer under frequent use. This one is special because the design allows for the blade to be changed quickly. The handle also works as a lever for releasing the frame to allow the blade to be changed. It has the wooden pattern handle with multiple piece construction that is in excellent condition. This multi-piece handle is a classic trait of a Civil War era saw because the doctors didn't know that bacteria would build up between the pieces of the handle. After the Civil War they went to a solid 1-piece construction to help prevent infection. It measures 14-1/2 inches in overall size with the blade measuring 8-1/2 of those inches. On the side it has the maker marking of "COLLIN & Co". This is a wonderful piece of Civil War era medical history.
