VERY RARE! Counterfeit 1815 Dated $50.00 From the Bank of Virginia in Richmond
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very neat pre-Civil War note. This is a counterfeit version of the $50.00 note for the Bank of Virginia in Richmond. It is hand dated in ink from April 1st 1815. The bank was originally authorized in 1804 and ultimately grew to a network of nine branches in addition to the parent bank in Richmond. This one was for the Lynchburg branch and it is so written in ink. The bank did not survive the end of the Civil War, with the bank's facilities in Richmond being destroyed during the city's capture in 1865. The note has the goddess in the center. This is a very convincing counterfeit. The counterfeit $50 is a particular rarity with an estimated 2-4 surviving notes known to Jones-Littlefield. The note measures 6-5/8ths inches by 3 inches in size. It is in well circulated condition and comes in an acid free holder for display and preservation.
