Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very rare non-excavated original Civil War Kentucky state seal coat button. This is the style that is listed as figure KY1 in Albert's button book and KY200f1 in Tice's book. This pattern was made by the Steele & Johnson Company in Waterbury, Connecticut. This one of the very few buttons that is correct Civil War era manufactured buttons for Kentucky. The button itself has a beautiful look even as you can see. The face of the button has some of the original gold wash remaining. The original back is present and you can see the generic ".SUPERIOR QUALITY" backmark of the Steele & Johnson company. They used this RMDC backmark so the retailer could sell the button without advertising for the actual maker. The shank is nicely intact as well. This is a wonderful button for any collection.
