Very Rare William Bird Style Confederate Cavalry Script "C" Coat Button CS178A
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very scarce button in beautiful condition! This is the scarce version of the script style Confederate cavalry button that was made by makers in England for import to the Confederate troops. This is the pattern listed as figure CS131A in Albert's button book and as CSC218A1 in Tice's button book. He states that any of this pattern button is "... Very rare." It has the script "C" on the face. The "C" shows up well and it has some of the original gold gilding remaining in the protected areas. The back of the button is intact and the maker marking is visible. It reads "+WILLM BIRD & CO + / LONDON" and the original shank is intact as well. This is one of the ones that were produced with the tinned iron back. This is a fantastic button and is the 1st non-excavated example that I have ever been able to offer.
