Non-Excavated Civil War Era Union Buttons From New York
Spectacular Coat Size Uniform Button New York City Guards NY73
Click on an image to enlarge

This is a fantastic button! It is the coat size version of the uniform button that was worn by the New York militia also known as the City Guard of New York City. It is the version listed as NY73 in Albert's button book and NY258A1 in Tice's button book. It has the New York City great seal in the center of the front with the "CITY GUARD" along the bottom edge. The New York City Guard was formed in 1833 and served at different times in the 9th and 10th New York State Militia Regiments. They went by the titles of the "Pulaski Cadets" and later as the "City Tigers". During the Civil War the regiment served as the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry. It has superb original gold gilding on the face and the back. You can still see the correct Civil War RMDC backmark of "SCOVILLS & CO. / WATERBURY". This is a fine uniform button of the New York City Guard.
