This is a nice looking Confederate made cannon shell. This is the classic 3 inch version of the famous Read shell and is the style to collectors as the Virginia pattern. They get this nickname because most of the excavated examples were found in that state. It has the majority of the copper sabot intact at the base of the shell. You can still see the lands and grooves in the copper from where the shell was fired. The body of the shell has been disarmed for display and preservation. At the top of the shell it has the open fuse hole. This is what would have held a paper style time fuse. When this shell was fired you can tell that it something extremely hard because of the way the copper of the fuze is distorted from impact. You can just imagine the force it would've taken to affect the fuze this way. Another very cool thing to show your friends is how some of the copper on the shell sabot chipped away near the base. When the confederate arsenals were finishing the shells. They weren't perfectly aligned. This would cause the iron or copper at the bottom to break away from the shell from the force of the cannon blast. It stand up straight like you see in the images. This is a nice looking original Civil War Confederate cannon shell that is Southern all the way.
