This is a scarce excavated Civil War Confederate infantry 19mm coat or vest button. This is the style that was run through the blockade to be sold to well-to-do Southern soldiers. The neat thing about this button is the backmark. On the back of the button it has the "floating style" shank. This style shank goes through to the back but pivots which helped to keep it from breaking like normal shanks. The original shank is intact and in fine shape. The face has a very nice look to the large ornate manuscript "I" that denotes the infantry branch of Confederate service. It has a ding up at the top and is priced accordingly. This is the 18-19mm style listed as figure CS175av in Albert's button book and CSI212am2 in Tice's button book. The verbal history that accompanied the buckle is that it was recovered in 1981 in a Confederate campsite near the battle of North Anna, Virginia. The Battle of North Anna was fought on May 23rd through 26th 1864, as part of Union Lt. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campaign against Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. This is a great looking and complete button all the way around.
