Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a wonderful artifact from United States presidency of President John Tyler. Tyler was the first Vice-President to take over after the death of the President. This is an original land grant issued from the General Land Office. It is on preprinted paper with the blanks beautifully filled in in fine Brown ink. It is dated from March 4th 1843. This document awards "Benjamin Flint of Franklin County, Indiana...seventy eight acres, and forty-four hundredths of an Acre" and states the location is near Palestine, Indiana. In the lower left hand corner it retains the United States great seal. In the lower right hand corner it has the beautiful ink signature of President John Tyler. This signature is secretarially signed by Robert Tyler. This is interesting because during the Civil War, Robert Tyler signed and authorized Confederate Savings Bonds. The document measures 16 inches wide and is 10 inches tall. It is accompanied by a modern Xerox image of Tyler. This is a great piece of history from Indiana.
