50th Illinois Attributed 1/4th Plate Tintype of a Union Soldier With His Father
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a cool looking 1/4th plate tintype image of a Civil War Union infantryman in his enlistedman's frock style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the quarter plate size. This means that the image measures approximately 4.25 inches by 3.25 inches in size. This image is nice and clear. The image shows the standing view of the soldier with his father seated beside him. The photographer gilded the buttons going down the front of the coat. On the back of the image it has the name "J. Greaver.” When I looked that name up, I found that there were only 2 soldiers with that name and one was a cavalryman. SO this means it is most likely John Greaver, who enlisted in A Company, 50th Illinois Volunteer Infantry on September 12, 1861, and was discharged for disability on July 1, 1862. It comes in a full leatherette case. This is a great looking tintype image of a Civil War soldier and his dad.
