Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a very scarce late Civil War document that references slaves. This is an appraisal list of the property in the estate of Richard Barlow of Spalding County, Georgia. It is dated from June 18th 1864 and has the listing of the assets of Mr. Barlow. The estate was valued at $33,505 with the majority of the value being places on the "11 Negroes". They values the slaves at $14,800 and compared to the 408-1/2 acres which were only valued at $4,800, you can see how much value they placed upon their slaves. The letter is written in brown ink and is light but legible. The paper itself measures 7-5/8ths inches by 11-1/4th inches in size. It is a cool War dated document!
