Triple Armed! 6th Plate Tintype of a Soldier With Knife, Pistol & Enfield Rifle
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a great looking 6th plate tintype image of a Civil War Union infantryman in his shell style military coat. These tintype images were produced by applying the image to a thin sheet of tin, hence the name. This is the size that is known to collectors as the sixth plate size. It measures about 2.75 inches by 3.25 inches in overall size. This image is vividly clear as you can see. The image shows the full view of the soldier. He wear his shell style military coat and has the forage style military cap on his head. Across his chest he has on the cartridge box sling and around his waist he has the oval style belt buckle and the capbox as well. Neatly tucked in his belt you can see the grip of a pistol. On the other side behind the cap box you can see the handle of a side knife when you blow the image up. By his side he holds an Enfield pattern military rifle with the bayonet attached. When you look at where the gun goes to even with the bayonet on the end you an tell that this guy was well over 6 feet tall. This was huge for the Civil War time frame. Without a doubt this is the tallest soldier I have ever had in an image. The image is in a complete leatherette case. It separated years ago and they repaired somewhere along the line. This is a great looking tintype image of an armed infantryman that was tall enough to play for the Celtics.
