This is a very nice 6th plate tintype image of a Civil War era soldier. These tintype images were produced on a thin tin plate. This one is the size known to collectors as the ninth plate image. This means that the image measures approximately 2-5/8ths inches by 3-1/4th inches in size. The image shows the waist up view of a young musician in his dress uniform. He has the single breasted frock style military coat with the musician stripes on the chest of the coat. The sleeves of the uniform have the chevrons that mean that he held the rank of sergeant major. On his head he wears the forage style military hat. Around his waist, you can see the sash that has been tinted red. You can also see his model 1840 musician's sword hand and part of the scabbard. The image comes in a half case that is leatherette in construction. This is a nice looking tintype image with superb content!
