This is an original ambrotype image of a Union soldier. The young man has on his shell style military coat with the tabs on the collar. This is the style coat that was worn by many of the early northern soldiers especially New York. It is often known as the New York State Model 1861 fatigue jacket. He has the hat on his head that has the crossed saber insignia. What makes this image really stand out is what he has on his uniform. On one side of the breast of his jacket it has the distinct 10th Legion marking on his jacket. It has the large Roman numeral "X" patch for the 10th Legion. These were men that served with the 56th New York Infantry. The 56th saw tons of service during the Civil War including Yorktown, Seven Pines and Malvern Hill. He also has the pistol tucked behind the belt. When you look closely, you see that the gun is one of the small size Remington-Beals revolver. You seldom see these revolvers in images. The image comes in a very nice full leatherette case. On the velvet pad it is stamped "D.T. Lawrence / Artist / Newburgh, N.Y." This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. This means that the image measures approximately 3 inches by 3.25 inches in size. These ambrotype images are done onto a glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. It is a great image with cool content.
