Socket Bayonet for the Brown Bess Pattern Musket by Wooley
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great looking socket bayonet for a musket for the English pattern military musket known as a 3rd Model Brown Bess. It has the full-length flat top blade. The socket has a muzzle ring diameter of .96 inches with the back side being .98 inches. What makes this one interesting is that it is the version that has the spring bar catch on the left hand side of the channel. This is the pattern that is illustrated and described on page 63 of the British & Commonwealth Bayonet book by Ian D. Skennerton & Robert Richardson. They call this style the "Indian Pattern Catch Socket Bayonet". Along the top of the blade it has the Woolley maker marking and some proof marks. Woolley was in business from 1798 until 1815. This is a fine looking bayonet. This piece of history came from the museum like personal collection of Mathew Woodburn.
