This is a great looking coat size post Civil War regimental uniform button. This is the button work by the 13th New York regiment of infantry. It has the number "13" in the center of the button face with the wreath around the numbers. The 13th regiment, also known as the "National Grays" was from Brooklyn and served three months in 1861 and then for three months in 1862 and then one month in 1863. The regiment later combined with the 40th New York Infantry to form the 87th New York volunteer Infantry. The face has fine detail with some of the original gold gilding remaining in the recesses. On the back of the button it has the original back and shank intact. We know that it was made after the Civil War because of the backmark of Scovill of Waterburyon the reverse of the button. This style wasn't used until after the Civil War had ended. Since it is made after the Civil War it is a lot more affordable than the Civil War version. The Civil War version would cost many times more than we are asking for this one. It will make a great fill in button until you do get that Civil War manufactured one for you collection.
