Click on an image to enlarge

This is a scarce cartridge box! It is the U.S. model 1861 cartridge box that was designed for the .69 caliber cartridges. On the back of the box it has the horizontal shoulder strap loops but not the vertical straps like the later boxes. The outer flap has the U.S. cartridge box plate attached. The plate has the crystal clear "US" on the outer brass. When you raise the outer flap you are greeted by the inner flap and small implement compartments. The inner flap has the desirable maker mark from the firm of Edwin A. Crossman who was located in Newark, New Jersey. Both of the original cartridge tins are still present in the innermost compartment. On the bottom of the box it has one of the roller buckles and the brass finial. The other roller buckle is on the inside of the box. As you can see the closure tab is present with a tear on the side. The leather on the box still displays well as you can see. This is a scarce box and has the very desirable Crossman maker mark.
