Beautiful U.S. Model 1872 Cavalry Officer's Saber by Horstmann of Philadelphia
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a great looking sword! It is an original U.S. model 1872 cavalry officer's saber in scabbard. This one would have been made about 1890 or so. These are easily distinguished by the cast brass hand guard. The guard has the Union eagle on the inside with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. It also has the stars on the underside of the grip. The grip still retains the original sharkskin grip with a fantastic look all over. It retains all of the small strands of the double twist wire on top of the sharkskin that flank the central spring wire. The blade is full-length at 33 inches with a gorgeous color all over. At the base of the blade it has the desirable retailer marking from the Horstmann Brothers & Company Firm of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The etching on the sword is still beautiful in all areas. The front side has the Eagle with the "E Pluribus Unum" motto and on the back side it has the "US" lettering. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard. It has the officer style brass mounts, drag and throat intact. It has the majority of the original plating on the body of the scabbard. This is a stunning and complete US Model 1872 cavalry officer's saber in scabbard.
