Non-Excavated Civil War Era Union Buttons From New York
Unlisted Backmark Non-Dug 1-Piece Gilded New York NY10
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a beautiful non-dug pre Civil War coat size New York state seal uniform button with an unlisted variation of backmark. This is the pattern that has the flat front with the famous New York eagle state seal on the face. It has the "EXCELSIOR" wording on the bottom edge. On the back it has the clear desirable pre-Civil War era backmark of "RICH TREBLE GILT". One thing that is special about this one is that in Tice's book he lists 38 variations of this button face but this particular backmark isn't among the variations. It's neat to have one that not even the top button collectors can say they own. The original shank is present and accounted for on the reverse of the button. This style is listed as figure NY10 in Albert's button book and NY100 in Tice's button book. This is a fine displaying 1-piece New York state seal button with a tougher to find backmark.
