Rare Butterfield Conversion 1841 Dated Harpers Ferry .69 Caliber Musket
Click on an image to enlarge
This is a very scarce gun! It is an original .69 caliber Harper's Ferry musket. Of course Harper's Ferry was the most famous of all arsenals even before it was taken over by Abolitionist John Brown. The lockplate of the gun has a the Harpers Ferry arsenal mark and the production date of 1841. In front of the hammer it has the eagle stamping and the block letter "US". The action works crisply on each position. When these guns left the factory in 1822 they were made as a flintlock and were converted later on so they could still be used when the flintlock system was replaced by the percussion system. This is one of the very scarce ones that ware converted by the firm of Jesse Butterfield of Philadelphia. In 1859, he received a US government contract to alter 5000 guns to his distinctive pellet primer system. The system was way too complex and it is believed that the contract was unfiled. This is a different style gun than the standard pellet primer system conversion. This gun is special because it shows that evidently Butterfield attempted to do standard conversions to percussion in addition to his pellet primer conversions. As with the standard conversions, they cut off the breech of the barrel and added their distinctive style bolster. The barrel is full-length at 42 inches. On the underside of the gun it still has both of the original sling swivels intact and they are both still pivot. In the channel underneath the barrel it has a more modern made ramrod. The stock has an attractive look to the American Walnut wood. Thereare stil traces of the correct Harpers Ferry inspector markings on the wood flat opposite of the lockplate. . This is an attractive displaying .69 caliber musket from the famous Harpers Ferry Arsenal with a very scarce Butterfield style conversion.
