Original Civil War Era Carte-de-Visite Images of Union Generals
Culp's Hill at Gettysburg! CDV Image of Union General John White Geary

This is a great looking original Civil War era CDV image of Union General John White Geary (1819-1973). The face of the card is a bust view image of the General in his General uniform with the printed identification down below. General Geary was born in Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania on December 30, 1819. During the Mexican war he served with the 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry and served with General Winfield Scott. He served as the 1st mayor of San Francisco, California and helped organize the Postal Service in California. He also served as the territorial governor of Kansas. On April 25, 1862 he was promoted to the rank of Brig. General. He was wounded twice at the battle of Cedar Mountain. After he recovered from his wounds he thought again at the battle of Chancellorsville and then at the battle of Gettysburg. His troops were positioned at Culp's Hill at Gettysburg. With a transfer to Sherman's command he participated in the "March to the Sea." Once they reached Savannah, Georgia he served as the position of military governor. On January 12, 1865 he received the brevet Major-General rank for "fitness took command and promptness to execute." After the Civil War, he was elected governor of Pennsylvania and served 2 terms. He is buried in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Cemetery. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. Along the bottom of the card it has the photographer mark of the Philadelphia firm of the Philadelphia Photo Company. This is a great looking image of one of Pennsylvania's Union Generals.
