This is a nice and 100% authentic 1862 dated Confederate States of America savings bond. This is the style issued under the act of the Confederate Congress on August 19th 1861 in the $100 denomination. It is the style that has the image of the Confederate secretary of the Navy Stephen Russell Mallory (c.1813-1873). He was born in Trinidad in the West Indies around 1813. His family immigrated to the United States and settled in Key West, Florida in 1820. In 1833 he was appointed by President Andrew Jackson as custom inspector at Key West. He became a lawyer in 1840. He served in the military during the Seminole War. He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1851 and served until he withdrew on January 21, 1861. During the Civil War he served all 4 years as the Confederacy's Secretary of the Navy. When the Civil War ended, he was imprisoned during the rest of 1865 and 1866. After the war he continued his law practice and died in Pensacola, Florida on November 9, 1873. This one has 15 of the original coupons attached at the bottom. When the date arrived that is printed on the bottom of the coupon you could cash it in for your interest payment. At the bottom edge of the top portion you can see the printer's mark from the firm of B. Duncan of Richmond, Virginia. It is correctly hand signed and numbered by the Confederate Government officials in fine brown ink. This one is signed by the register of the Confederate Treasury Robert Tyler. Tyler was the son of the 10th President of the United States John Tyler. This is the Confederate bond listed as CR-34 in the bond book by Criswell and as #73 in the Ball book on Confederate Bonds. This is a very attractive original Confederate states savings bond.
