1862 Dated City of Lafayette 15 Cent Note with Horse Drawn Fire Engine
Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a neat original Civil War piece of currency from Lafayette, Indiana. This is a cool municipal issued note whose obligation and vignette complement one another. The majority of the note has an exciting scene of a Civil war era horse-drawn steam fire engine is at the lower right and noted in the text is, "on account of Steam Fire Engine" (similar to text used on the City of Fort Wayne loan scrip in this sale). At upper left is a portrait of the mayor, Thomas B. Ward, and two engraved signatures are at the bottom, one being his (at right). Notes like this met critical change needs and could raise funds for the public need, such as fire safety. It measures 5 inches by 2-1/2 inches in overall size. This one is heavily worn shape and has been backed long ago by some paper. Don't miss this note from the Hoosier state.
