Here is a great looking sword! It is an original U.S. model 1872 cavalry officer's saber in scabbard. This one would have been made about 1890 or so. These are easily distinguished by the cast brass hand guard. The guard has the Union eagle on the inside with the arrows of war in one talon and the branch of peace in the other. It also has the stars on the underside of the grip. The grip still retains the original sharkskin grip with a fantastic look all over. It retains all of the small strands of the double twist wire on top of the sharkskin. The blade is full-length at 33-3/4th inches with a pretty color all over. At the base of the blade it has the bear style trademarking. The etching on the sword is still beautiful in all areas. The back side has the Eagle with the "E Pluribus Unum" motto and on the front side it has the ornate style "US" lettering. The sword is accompanied by the original scabbard. It has the officer style brass mounts, drag and throat intact. It has the majority of the original plating on the body of the scabbard. What makes this one special is that between the 2 mounts of the sword it has a jeweler inscription that lets us know who it belonged to. It proudly reads "Presented to / Major Ellsworth Hochersperger / by Company A 20th Infantry N.G.P. / April 27th 1899". I did a quick search for that name but didn't see anything. It definitely deserves more research. This is a stunning and complete US Model 1872 cavalry officer's saber in scabbard.
