Portsmouth, Virginia "SAVINGS FUND SOCIETY" 1861 Dated 25 Cent Note

Here is a neat original note. This is a piece of currency was issued by the Portsmouth Savings Fun Society Bank in Portsmouth, Virginia and is marked as such along the top of the note. It has the printed date May 11th 1861. The Society was authorized by the General Assembly on February 28, 1853. While its ultimate fate is clouded, it is very likely that it did not survive the end of the Civil War and its attendant financial implications for banks whose assets consisted of Confederate securities by 1865. These notes were printed by Hoyer & Ludwig and features a vignette of the Spanish milled dollar coin and its fractions equivalents corresponding to the denomination. It is made with the blank back which is known as it being "Uniface". The date is hand inscribed in brown ink signature. Don't miss your chance to own this interesting note.
