General Josiah Gorgas Autographed Letter
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an authentic signature of Confederate General Josiah Gorgas(1832-1904). Gorgas was one of the most important men in the Confederacy but was born up North. He organized the Confederate ordnance Department and aided in arranging many of the imports through the Union naval blockade. After the Civil War he served as the President of the University of Alabama. It is a nice clear signature clipped from a document. It still has his rank as Colonel. The paper measures approximately 3-1/4th inches by 1 inch in overall size. The letter is all in Gorgas' hand and is written from the "Ordnance Office" with a date of June 25, 1861. It is addressed to General J.B. Floyd (Former Governor of Virginia), regarding missing rifles. It reads in full: "I regret very much that the misconduct of Reynolds should deprive you of the Harper's Ferry Rifles you would have had by this time. A report in relation to it has been made by direction of the President and will doubtless be transmitted to you. I will endeavor still to supply you, but the Rifles I intended for you (from Augusta) have by some mischance never reached me, & the only ones in store now are the Rifles sent by the Gov of North Carolina to the President." He signs it at the bottom with his rank of Major General. It is a fine original signature that will make a solid addition to any Confederate Civil War collection. A Xerox copy of an original photograph of the general will accompany the autograph for display purposes.
