Click on an image to enlarge
This is a nice looking Confederate made cannon shell. This is the classic 3 inch version of the famous Read shell and is the style to collectors as the Virginia pattern. They get this nickname because most of the excavated examples were found in that state. It has the full copper sabot intact at the base of the shell. You can still see the lands and grooves in the copper from where the shell was fired. The body of the shell has been disarmed for display and preservation. At the top of the shell it has the Confederate copper fuse holder. This is what would have held a paper style time fuse. The history that that is written on the side of the shell states that the shell was recovered in Richmond, Virginia. Richmond was the capitol of the Confederacy and also one of the last areas where the Confederates fought before the end of the War. This is a nice looking original Civil War Confederate cannon shell that is Southern all the way.
