Anthony Backmarked CDV Image of Union Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont
Click on an image to enlarge

This is an authentic CDV image of Union Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont (1803-1865). It is a nice clear CDV of the admiral in his dress uniform with his sword cradled in one arm. Du Pont was born in New Jersey and began his 50 year naval career in 1815. During the Mexican War he cleared Mexican forces out of the Gulf of California. He helped to start the U.S. Naval Academy in 1850. He was promoted to Rear Admiral after his successful capture of Port Royal in November of 1861. After his unsuccessful attempt to take Charleston South Carolina he was asked to give up command and spent the rest f the war on boards and commissions. The overall size of a CDV image is approximately 2.5 inches by 4 inches in size. On the back of the card it has the desirable Anthony backmark that notes it was made from one of Brady's Photographic Negatives. It is a fine original CDV that will make a solid addition to any Civil War collection.
