Authentic Civil War and Earlier Percussion Cap Boxes
Newark, New Jersey Made Civil War Leather Percussion Cap Box
Click on an image to enlarge

This is an original Civil War soldier's percussion capbox. These were used by the soldiers to carry the percussion caps for the rifles, carbines and pistols. This is a nice one with both of the original belt loops on the back. It has the brass finial intact as well as the closure tab that holds the outer flap in place. The inner flap has the remnants of the "NEWARK,NJ" maker mark still partially present. There were several makers in Newark that made many quality leather goods during the Civil War such as this one but I belive that this is the marking from the firm of J. Davy. In the innermost compartment it no longer has the lamb's wool on the inside. The soldiers often removed the wool so they could get to the caps easier. This is a very attractive original Civil War soldier's percussion cap box.
