Click on an image to enlarge
Here is a really tough to find Civil War carbine. This is the early production of the 2nd model Civil War cavalry carbine of the Burnside patent. They were designed by Ambrose Burnside, the famous Civil War General, who before the war served as treasurer of the Bristol Firearms Company. He sold his interest in the company in June 1859. These early model Burnsides are very easily distinguished because they are produced without a forestock. They also have the frame that is designed with out the guide screw in the markings on the gun are completely different than the standard Civil War versions. The lock plate of the gun has a clear "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO." marking to go along with the "PROVIDENCE, R.I." production location. This is the correct marking for the last part of the 2,000 production of this 2nd model gun. The top of the breech block still has the partial stamping that reads "BURNSIDE"S PATENT MARCH 25TH 1856." The gun has the serial number of "1681" on the barrel and frame. The breech block is serial number 2,398. The barrel is full-length at 21 inches and it has the original front and rear sights intact. The rear sight is complete with the single leaf design. The action of the gun works on the first position but slips off of the second position. On the back of the frame it has the original saddle ring bar with the ring intact as well. The shoulder stock of the gun has a nice dark ancient look to the Walnut wood. On the underside of the stock it has the original sling swivel present as well. In Flayderman's guide he states that they only produced about 2000 of these guns and they were produced between 1860 in 1862. This one has a pure in untouched look all over.
