This is a nice displaying original pre-Civil War piece of currency from the state of South Carolina. It is an original 1857 dated $5 note from the Merchants' Bank of the South Carolina with the office in Cheraw, South Carolina. It is hand signed and numbered as it should be with this style of note. In the center of the right hand side of the note has the hand written date of issuance of August 9th 1857. The scene in the center shows Lady Liberty on one side of the state seal and George Washington (a Southerner) on the other side. In the lower right hand corner it has the image of the steam train going down the tracks. The black and green tones of the ink make this a beautiful note all the way around. The overall size of this note is 6-3/4ths inches by 3-1/4ths inches. This note is in attractive circulated condition. It comes in an acid free holder for preservation and display.
