Here is a fine non-excavated cavalry spur. This is one of the exact spurs that is pictured and described on page 51 of the fine spur book by Dr. Bob Baird entitled Confederate, US and Other Civil War Used Spurs. He explains how this is a small size version spur of the style that is known as the "Unbreakable" Western Affiliation spur. This one is very small in comparison to the standard ones. They get this nickname because the majority of the spurs of this pattern are heavily made so they would be less likely to break. These small stature versions are quite tough to find. This is a gorgeous looking spur! This is the non-excavated style that is Southern in manufacture. Numerous examples of this style have been excavated in campsites occupied by Southern troops. This is almost certainly one of the ones made by the famous firm of Memphis Novelty Works. The spur is completely unmarked and is the style that was worn by cavalry enlisted during the Civil War. It has the original rowel is missing in action from the rooster style neck. On the back of the spur legs it has the rectangular style strap loops holes. It has a beautiful non-excavated patina with a pretty copper color to the brass. On the inside of the spur you can still vividly see the lines were the spur was filed down for finishing before it left the factory. The spur is in fine non-excavated condition for its age. This is a great looking spur from all angles!
