Very Scarce City of Philadelphia Marked Model 1849 Prussian Navy Musket

Here is a very scarce gun. In our 30 years in the business, this is the first one of these we have been able to offer. This is the gun that is known as the Model 1849 Prussian Naval Musket. It fires a massive bullet of .71 caliber from the full-length 37 inch long smoothbore barrel. The barrel is an overall brown patina with light pitting and scattered fine oxidation. The lock is a similar brown patina with gray undertones and scattered fine oxidation, more moderate on the bolster. The left diagonal of the barrel flat is marked "CITY / OF / PHILADA" above A. Wurfflein inspection mark. The top barrel flat has the faint remnants of the Prussian Federal Naval [double headed eagle] / [anchor] mark. The lock is appropriately marked "[double headed eagle] / SUHL / V.C.S. / [ANCHOR]". It has the Prussian marking on the iron buttplate tang behind the mounting screw. The buttplate has a finish similar to the lock and barrel. The arm features three brass bands, sideplate and triggerguard. The brass surfaces have a nicely mellowed patina with light staining and impact marks, all with Prussian markings. The walnut stock has a rich look all over with the wear you expect to see on a gun that saw service. The stock has a light but visible eagle above anchor mark along with another proof on the left stock flat opposite of the lockplate. It has a vertical "378" stamp on the the right side of the buttstock. The brass blade front sight atop the upper band is in place as well as both of the sling swivels. In the channel under the barrel it has the original ramrod. The lock remains strong and functions well mechanically. It is missing the original spade-shaped bayonet retaining catch under the barrel. This is a great opportunity to own an about very good example of these truly rare Civil War import muskets of which only 1200 were produced.
