Click on an image to enlarge
This button has the most gorgeous gold gilded appearance you could ever hope for! This is a spectacular non-excavated Civil War uniform button for the state of Arkansas. These are one of the most coveted of all Civil War uniform buttons. This is the classic Civil War style that has the state seal on the face of the button with "ARKANSAS" and "REGANT POPULUS" around the rim. The Arkansas motto of Regant Populus is Latin and translates into "The People Rule". The face of the button has a great look with 100% of the original gold gilding remaining intact. The original back is present on the back and it has the correct Civil War era Steele & Johnson Company maker's mark for the firm of Horstmann & Allien of New York. Steele & Johnson is believed to have made these buttons for use on the better made coats that would have been sold by Horstmann slightly before the Civil War. The button has the original shank nicely intact on the reverse. This is the style listed as figure AK1 in Albert's button book and AK200a1 in Tice's button book. This is great looking button by anyone's standards.
