This is a neat little document. It measures about 8 inches by 3 inches in size. It was written on June 8th 1868 and is a receipt for the purchase of a horse by William Robertson Boggs. Boggs was born in Augusta, Georgia and graduated from West point in 1853. Boggs entered the Confederate service as an ordnance officer under Beauregard at Charleston. He then served as Chief of Engineers and Artillery for General Bragg in Florida. He then served as Chief of Staff under General Kirby Smith in the Trans-Mississippi Department. After the Civil War he wrote a history on the Confederacy's Trans-Mississippi Department. On the left hand side it has the George Washington tax stamp. This is a clear signature with rank on an original Confederate document.
