This is a nice dug Civil War Confederate artillery coat button. This is the classic artillery style uniform button that was worn by the true fighting artillerymen of the Civil War. On the front of the button it has the bold, proud letter "A" in block style that denotes the artillery branch of service. This is the version that has the tin back and when it was recovered the back and shank were missing. They have been restored for display purposes and it is priced accordingly. This is the style listed as figure CSA243 in Tice's book and CS117 in Albert's button book. This is an attractive excavated original Confederate artilleryman's coat button.
