McArthur's Scottish Highlander 9th Plate Tintype In a Gutta Purcha Case
Click on an image to enlarge
This is an original image of a soldier from the Civil War. It is a tintype image of a Yankee soldier from the chest up. What makes the image special is that the soldier is wearing the Scottish hats McArthur's unit became famous for. Born in Scotland, General John McArthur apprenticed as a blacksmith before emigrating to the United States. He settled in Chicago and began an Iron Works company. When the Civil War started, McArthur was appointed Colonel of the 12th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, was was soon given command of the 1st Brigade in Gen. Charles Smith's division. After the battle of Fort Donelson, McArthur was promoted to Brig. Gen. and led the 2nd Brig., 2nd Div. of the Army of the Tennessee at Shiloh. The brigade wore Scottish-style hats, earning the nickname "Scottish brigade." He was present at Corinth, Vicksburg, Nashville, and most other battles of the Western Theater. Indeed, he became one of the most able Western commanders. After the war he returned to Chicago, serving as Commissioner of Public Works during the Great Fire and as Postmaster, among other positions. This one is the size known to collectors as the ninth plate image. This means that the image measures approximately 2 inches by 2.5 inches in size. The image is in an original complete gutta purcha style case. The brass mat and cover glass is still present as well. This is a very pleasing looking original Civil War soldier tintype image of one of the men from the Scottish Brigade!
