This is a nice looking original CDV image of a Civil War Union sailor. The soldiers and sailors would buy these from the photographers in the cities or even from traveling photographers that would come to camp or they made it into town. They would purchase them in small quantities to send home to family or friends. This one shows the young Union sailor in his dress uniform. He is wearing his double breasted military coat and you can see he has the insignia on his hat. Around his waist he wears the 2-piece style of belt buckle and by his side he has his officer sword in hand. The back of the card stock has the photographic gallery marking of J.E. McClees from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It also has the George Washington tax stamp as well as the pencil name of "Fred Klapp USN". The brief search I did shows Frederick Klapp listing as serving int he navy but it needs more research. This is a fine looking original CDV image of a Union sailor in uniform.
